Before creating a new Event, make sure no Event already in the database pertains to the same Event :

  • Search for all Events in the database with the same Event date for the same Country (the City or Address might be slighlty different)
  • In case you find any, check out the Event details to ensure the Event Type is correct and the breakdown of victims is correct. May you think otherwise, please advise your Country Reviewer prior to entering a new Event for the same facts.

Tip : feel free to use the cumulative filter options in the Browse tab !

To create an Event, all 3 tabs at the bottom (1. Location, 2. Event Details, 3. Initial Reference) must be filled in and all errors fixed in "Error check" section of each tab before the "Create Event" Button (top-right corner) is activated.

Use the tooltips displayed when leaving your cursor over a field or any entry in a dropdown menu.

Below are instructions to walk you through each field in this tab :

EVENTS & SUB-EVENTS : PLEASE READ CAREFULLY !

There will undoubtedly come across many cases where an event contains more than one "Event Types". E.g. let's say you want to report the abduction of a group of people that resulted in 12 of them being beaten, and 6 women being raped. You would :

  3. "Duplicate Event & Edit copy" to add the third event and edit "Event Types" of this second copy to "Sexual Assault", indicate "rape" in the text field, then select "Gender" in "People Targeted" then "Female" and enter "6" in the victims table.
  4. Finally click "Create Event" and this time click the "Browse" button to return to the Events overview tab.

This feature will allow you to just modify the entries that need to be altered for each sub-event (e.g. "Category", "Event Type", "People Targeted, number of victims, add new reference etc.), without having to restart from scratch : all data will be showing in all 3 tabs in the duplicated sub-event !

EVENTS WITH MULTIPLE TARGET TYPES : PLEASE READ CAREFULLY !

In cases where an event affects more than one type of "People targeted", e.g. considering the abduction of a group of 20 people because they are politicians from an opposition party, which resulted also in 6 women being raped, you will need to create 2 separate events :

  1. Create a base "Event Type", with the largest number of victims involved. In our example, you would choose Abduction). Select "Profession" then "Political Party Member", indicate the Party name in the text field and add dispatch the 20 victims in the victims table. Fill in all other fields in all 3 tabs, then press "Create Event", then
  2. Click "Create another Event from current data" to add the second event, edit "Event Type" to "Sexual Assault", the "People targeted" to "Gender" and "Female", add "6" into the victims table and add a new reference if need be. Then press "Create Event" and select "Browse" to return to the events overview tab.

This feature will allow you to just modify the entries that need to be altered for each sub-event (e.g. "Category", "Event Type", "People Targeted, number of victims, add new reference etc.), without having to restart from scratch : all data will be showing in all 3 tabs in the duplicated sub-event !

CASUALTIES TABLE

Enter figures both in the "Target Victims" and the "Collateral Victims" sections of the table ; you may fill in only the cells for which you have information, and use the "Unknown" columns when gender or age is not available : no need to fill in the others with "0".

DESCRIPTION

Enter all relevant details known about this event except casulaties (that will be dealt with specifically in the casualties table above).

Please bear in mind the following 2 restrictions :

  • Never mention any sensitive data that might endanger anyone, like witness names : you may indicate this im the "Note" text field in the Reference tab and make sure you check the "Text Fields are Confidential" box so that only you or an admin can access this information when displaying the event (see the guidlines in the "Initial Reference" tab for more information).
  • No need to copy and paste the whole wabpage or document you will add as a reference in the "Description text field, as you will be able to provide the URL link or upload the whole document to our server. Just write down or copy and paste only the details you think are relevant to better describe the event. This field is optional and limited to 32.000 characters.
